About us

Maiwald & Mosse was initially formed in 2020 by John Mosse and Gordon Maiwald, both studied blacksmithing and metalwork at the National college of blacksmithing and shared an interest in historical ironwork and its conservation and repair. The company began trading as a Limited company in 2022 after the taking over of the forge at Anvil barn, Miserden from Coode Conservation.

Originally from Munich, Germany- Gordon Maiwald originally trained as a gold, silversmith, and jeweller before studying Blacksmithing and metalwork at Hereford. following his studies in The National college of blacksmithing he gained experience in the teaching forge skills while also undertaking a HND in education. He began working alongside Coode conservation in 2022, before taking over the forge. He continues to teach and create works in both iron and precious metals, which lends a broad understanding of metal to the company.

Originally from Kilkenny, Ireland- John Mosse achieved full distinctions in the national college of blacksmithing, followed by an MA in metal conservation at West Dean College of arts and conservation with a focus on studying iron oxides. In 2021 he was admitted into the freedom of the worshipful company of Cutlers. John has been awarded several prizes for ironwork, as well as the future makers award and being shortlisted for the RDS crafts award in 2021.

Through the company and working with other professionals in the field, and on secured tenders the company has a broad range of experience ranging from private estates, ecclesiastical works, works for the Gloucestershire and Herefordshire dioceses, and a UNESCO heritage site with the waterways trust.

The aim for the company is to continue its works in the heritage sector in the conservation and repair of historic metal and to eventually expand into providing an outlet for the education and up skilling of blacksmiths and enthusiasts in the treatment of these important artefacts.
